Choosing Between Bolster, Sofa, Cave and Mat Beds
The shape of a bed changes how a pet approaches it, rests on it and sees the room. Start with the places your cat or dog already chooses, then compare the four structures below.
Bolster beds: a defined edge.
A raised border frames the resting surface. This can suit a pet that curls against cushions or likes a place to lean its head. Check how much of the outside footprint is taken up by the border. Round styles encourage a curled arrangement, while rectangular styles may offer more length.
Sofa beds: open at the front.
Sofa styles generally combine an open approach with a back or side edge. They can work well in shared rooms where a pet rests near household seating and likes to keep an open view. Consider both the surface length and the height of the front edge. A furniture-like outline may take up more floor space than a mat.
Cave beds: a sheltered space.
A roof or hood creates a more enclosed resting area. Consider this structure if your pet already seeks quiet covered spots. A cave should still allow easy entry, turning and exit. Leave the entrance clear and let your pet choose whether to use it. An adjustable or convertible cave may offer more than one arrangement.
Mats and open cots: a simpler surface.
A low pad keeps the resting area open, making it easy to approach from different directions. An elevated cot adds an open mesh surface on a frame. Check the cot’s listed load limit as well as its dimensions. A mat may be a convenient shape for an indoor corner, but it still needs enough room for your pet’s full resting posture.
Choose care instructions you can follow.
Cloth, plush, corduroy and mesh have different textures. A removable cover is not automatically machine washable. Read each product’s care details and the label supplied with it. Remove loose hair regularly, clean spills promptly, and let washed fabric dry completely before use. Where specific wash instructions are not listed, ask before using a machine.
Put fit before appearance.
Choose the structure first, compare measurements next, then choose the finish that suits your room. Avoid relying on a pet’s weight as a complete size guide. Our measuring guide explains the difference between outside dimensions and usable sleeping space.
